2nd December 2005: Squall Line Chase Across Western Sydney

To be honest this was a no brainer, by the time I left work a squall line had well and truly set itself ahead of the passing front and was spread across about a 1,000km of NSW. In many ways all that was left was to head out in search of some part of Sydney that had a good clear view of the sky and wait for the atmospheric freight train to arrive.

To that end I headed out on the M4, exiting at Wallgrove Road and found a good spot by the side of Old Wallgrove Road with a good view to the West and with careful positioning an absence of those dreaded powerlines and the other enemy of storm photos: trees.

It was about 6:30pm when the line rolled over the Blue Mountains and into the Sydney Basin, extending as far as the eye could see North and South. The front of the line was boiling and rolling with the occasional CG dropping down from under the grey skirt of cloud.

At about 7pm, just before the rain arrive, I jumped back in the car and headed back down the M4 to the roof top car park at Rhodes Shopping Centre where I got a few more shots before being engulfed in a furious few minutes of heavy rain which tended to the horizonal in the strong winds.
