22nd November 2005: Warragamba Storm Chase - Lightning show across Sydney
The passage of a trough across NSW on this day herald the best chance yet for Sydney to see storms. Checking the radar cells had started to develop on the ranges to the South-West of Sydney so I left Balmain, for a while I tossed up wether to take the M5 to head down towards Camden or M4 to Penrith, finally deciding that the best bet would be the M4 as I could work my way South if need be. As it turned out the M4 was a good, I exited at Luddenham Road and then tracked through several lanes towards a storm cell that was building over the hills towards Warragamba Dam. With the sun was now quite low in the sky lightning the storm from behind (photo 3) I set up my camera on the side of Bents Basin Road near Wallacia and took several shots of CG's coming from the gust front moving ahead of the storm.
At about 7pm I started moving further North towards the M4 along Mulgoa Road. CG's where dropping everywhere and finally the storm caught up with me - with torrential rain for about 20 minutes, lightning at very close quarters and hail at times to 2cm. There wasn't much to do but let it pass. I then followed back down the M4 as it continued to drop multitudes of CG's as it moved across the Sydney Basin.
