16 October 2000 - Low level flooding: Namoi and Peel Rivers

A trough extending from the Kimberley and into Victoria and a slow moving high in the Tasman produced widespread showers across the the North and East of Australia. In the 24 hours to 9am on 16 November Narrabri West received 48mm, and Tamworth 22mm. Some areas received up to 200 millimetres in the preceeding 72 hours.

At 12.30 pm on the 16th, the Peel River at Tamworth was at 2.49 metres (near its peak) and below the minor flooding level. Inflows from Coxs Creek caused initial rises at Boggabri and downstream. This will be followed by inflows from the Peel and Mooki Rivers which are expected to produce a peak at Gunnedah on Friday evening. At this stage, the Namoi River at Gunnedah is expected to peak below minor flood level.

At noon, the Mooki River at Breeza was peaking slightly above the 5 metre level.

The Gwydir River at Gravesend peaked around noon on the 16th at 8.32 metres with minor flooding. All black-soil roads in the north-western areas are closed to all but four-wheel drives, with many other roads closed by flooded causeways
