Violent Storm in Tamworth - 4th January, 1957

In this event more than 18mm of rain was recorded at the Tamworth airport in 25 minutes and gusts of up to 93mph were recorded in a violent 30 minute storm which tore sheets of iron from homes and buildings and snapped large branches off trees, flattened fences and smashed telephone poles. A brick garage under construction in South Tamworth (Melrose St) was blown to the ground.

Peel Street suffered minor flood as drains could not cope with the flow of water.

The storm was preceeded by extensive lighting and a dry dust storm.
