1910 Peel/Namoi River Flood - January, 1910

Tamworth experienced one of its largest floods in January 1910. The photograph below, taken from the Tamworth post office, looks towards West Tamworth and shows Fitzroy street and the old grandstand at No.1 Oval.

1910 Peel River Flood

In the midst of the flood, Mr F.J Hassan and one of his employees drove a sulky to the front of his Peel Street shop in the block between Fitzroy and Brisbane Street. The strong current in the street caught the horse and sulky, sweeping the men down the street and into the tree outside the Central Hotel, and eventually all the way to railway viaduct where they escaped.

Additional information is difficult to source for this event, although Narrabri also experienced major flooding at this time.
